Christmas – Elves their Secret History & True Purpose Revealed!

Elves have a fascinating history being associated with Germanic paganism to psychedelic experiences, story telling and of course to Christmas and Santa Claus. By the mid-1800’s the elves true purpose was revealed by the Scandinavian’s. Read on to find out …

Elves were originally seen to be the creation of Germanic paganism who thought them to be light creatures who lived in the heavens. Elves have been depicted as male or female, tiny or dwarf-like, youthful and immortal with magical powers. Later they were often referred to as living underground, in forests, springs and wells. Elves generally were magical beings who could control what people see as well as experience. Elves and fairies are also highly associated with the mushroom “Amanita Muscaria” also referred to as “magic mushrooms” not only in art but in Psychedelic experiences.

Elves already a tradition associated with story telling and magic, was by the mid-1800’s revealed by the Scandinavian’s that their true purpose was to help Father Christmas. The elves could be helpful however their mischievousness was still event in story telling. Tales suggested that how you were treated by the elves depended on whether the person was thought to be naughty or nice! Particularly in America the diminutive, green with pointy ears type are depicted as Santa’s helpers making toys in his workshop at the North Pole.

According to some legends and post-Christian folklore especially in Europe, elves are mischievous pranksters who make special appearances during the lead up to Christmas. For example “Albtraum” is a German word for nightmare which also means “elf dream”. Earlier the word meant “elf pressure” as it was believed that nightmares are a result of an elf sitting on the dreamer’s head! Elves also were believed to braid people’s hair while sleeping, make milk sour and run off with sausages. People of Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway believed that a bowl of porridge left out would prevent elves from playing tricks on people especially during the festive season! Today, elves associated with Christmas are symbols to remind children to be good and not naughty!

Christmas & Angels – History & Meaning of An Angelic Secret Service!

Angels play an important role in Christmas celebrations. The word, "Angel" is derived from the Hebrew and Greek words which simply means "messenger". Angels are depicted as immortal, human like in appearance, transparent with wings who live in the heavens, come to us as the intermediaries of a higher power and are our link to the mystical heavens!

An Angel is a common symbol placed on the top of the Christmas tree today. Gabriel is the heavenly Angel of Christmas who revealed to Mary that she would have a son “God”. A Christian story tells of a small group of tiny Angels on a special assignment to watch over and guide Mary and Jesus on their journey to Bethlehem. They sang songs of thanksgiving believed to be heard at all four corners of the earth. Today the hymn “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” is played in all church choirs during the Christmas season. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem an Angel of Christmas appeared to the shepherds telling them of the Christ Childs birth. Angels in Christianity rapidly evolved in popularity during 1100 AD to 1200 AD. The teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas is believed to have had the most importance regarding the evolution of Angels.

The concept of “Angels” as spiritual or heavenly beings is evidenced in almost all cultures on earth. Archaeological evidence of Angels dates back to King Stela of Ur-Nammus in Egypt 2250 BC where Angels are depicted flying over the head of this king while he was in prayer. However there are numerous and many accounts of Angels throughout history. Here are some references:

- The Romans and Greeks have many references in their history of Angels especially as winged cherub sculptures seen on buildings and fountains.

- There is a popular belief that the Roman Saint Valentine inspired the figure of “Cupid” a winged cherub (usually a child-like image, curly hair, small wings behind their shoulders, some clothed and others unclothed and usually portrayed in flight) who shoots arrows at lovers. This is a popular Angel image associated with Valentines Day today.

- Islam (Koran) – Angels are mentioned many times in the Holy Qur'an (Koran) which was dictated to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel, the “Divine Messenger”. There is a belief that everyone has two Angels (one to the right who records good deeds and one to the left who records bad deeds).

- Hebrews (Torah) – the belief in four Archangels (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel).

- The Bible – says that the Angels were singing at the creation of the world. The New Testament says that the Angels rejoice when people on earth are sorry for their sins! There are countless references to Angels in the Bible with nine ranks of Angels counted. The Cherubim and Seraphim Angels being of the highest order with the Archangel being the chief Angel and leader.

Angels are spiritual beings often seen strumming harps and floating on clouds! While most references to Angels are with two wings The Bible makes mention of Angels with 2 sets of wings (Cherubs) and up to six wings (Seraphim). Christians believe everyone has a guardian Angel who watches over them. The scriptures reference Angels as masculine. It also references good and bad Angels. Christians believe all humans have a Guardian Angel they can call upon at anytime for protection and guidance.

Here are some creative responses to the existence of Christmas Angels and their activity today:

- They are watching every activity and wanting to awaken us to improve our conduct and thus avoid being on the “naughty” list!

- Christmas Angels are there to remind us of our spiritual realm. That there is more to us than what we merely gauge with our five senses. We have a depth and ability beyond what we currently recognize and thus we need to develop our connection with higher power.

- They are there to remind us to seek the best in ourselves at all times no matter who is watching or not watching. Integrity is a virtue they wish to remind us to practice at all times!

- To remind us of powerful, unseen agents all around us that are there to protect us and help in times of need through the power of healing prayer.

- They act as role models to help and give to others. They constantly are reminders to help and give without expectation of anything in return.

- They remind us to “lighten up” in our lives and have a little fun! They know that families who laugh together stay together! Laughter is healing and those Christmas Angels love to see the lighter side of life!

So no matter whether you believe or not believe in Angels, they certainly add to the magic, fun and joy associated with the celebrations and festivities of Christmas.

Christmas Self Esteem – Giving the Gift of Self Worth, Self Confidence and Self Respect

Christmas Self Esteem – Giving the Gift of Self Worth, Self Confidence and Self Respect to Yourself, Your Children, Family & Friends!

Give a gift that keeps on giving - self-esteem which is the collection of feelings or beliefs that we have about ourselves. How we define ourselves influences our motivations, attitudes, and behaviors and affects our emotional well being. Self-confidence, great relationships, and a good shot at success in whatever you attempt is the prize for self esteem. Now is the time to think about your overall self appraisal of your own self worth, self-confidence and self respect and how this influences your children and others around you and what you can do about it this Christmas season.

Having healthy self esteem will produce:

- Armor against life’s challenges

- Feeling good about yourself

- Find it easier to handle conflicts and negative pressures

- More realistic approach to life – will look for solutions and have the ability to move forward rather than get stuck

- Generally optimistic and will enjoy life more

Low self esteem produces:

- Challenges becoming sources of major anxiety and frustration

- Harder to find solutions to problems

- Produce critical thoughts such as ‘I’m not good enough’, ‘I’m not loveable’, ‘I always do things wrong’, ‘nobody cares about me’

- Will belittle oneself for weaknesses rather than accept them eg. will say ‘I’m an idiot’ rather than say ‘I don’t understand’

- produce a passive, withdrawn or depressed state

- distorted perceptions of life - can see temporary setbacks as intolerable and permanent

- a sense of pessimism predominates

Give the gift of fostering healthy self esteem in your child!
Know that low self-esteem begins in childhood and is the result of the actions and attitudes of significant older people around us. Don’t program your children to feel less than wonderful about themselves. Here are a few great tips of how you can give and make a big difference:

  • Praise your child: especially for jobs well done and for their effort put in. Be mindful of your words, what you say and be truthful. Reward effort and completion rather than outcome. For example your child lost at basketball and didn’t make the finals, say ‘you didn’t make the finals but I’m proud of the effort you put in’ rather than ‘next time you’ll work harder and make it’.
  • Be a positive role model & do not criticize even in jest. Ensure you develop and display healthy self esteem with your role modeling. You don’t want your child to grow up mirroring adults with pessimistic or unrealistic expressions about abilities and limitations. For example, don’t criticize find positive ways to address an issue. If you criticize chances are your child will grow up with a mate or boss who is constantly telling them what they do wrong because they have grown up believing it is ok for people to treat them that way and thus they allow it and attract it. Do not use demeaning nicknames in jest they are criticism and they damage self esteem.
  • Address irrational beliefs. It’s important to not only identify unhealthy or inaccurate irrational beliefs but to redirect them. These beliefs may include issues around attractiveness, perfection and abilities. An example might be that your child is doing well at school generally yet is struggling with English. Your child might say things like ‘I’m not a good student’ or ‘I can’t do English’. This is a generalization that is setting up the outcome for failure. You would redirect the child with something like ‘You are doing well at school and you are a good student you just need to spend more time on the English subject and we can work on developing that’.
  • Give spontaneous affection. Tell your child you are proud of him or her. Hug your child. Leave a note on their pillow ‘I think you’re terrific’ or ‘you make a difference’. A parent’s love can support and boost a child’s self esteem. Be mindful not to overdo it – kids are good knowing when it’s not honest.
  • Don’t argue in front of your children. Exposing your child to repeated arguing and fighting may cause withdrawal and depression. Low self esteem will result from a child feeling unsafe or being abused at home. Respect your child by creating a safe, nurturing home environment.

Self esteem is not about bragging that you are the greatest or that you are perfect. Nobody is perfect but having healthy self esteem will result in you or your child knowing that you or he or she is worthy of being loved and accepted. Self esteem creates a belief in one’s self and courage to try new things and the ability to make better choices about your mind and body rather than go along with crowd doing dumb or dangerous activities. You’ll respect yourself even when you make mistakes because you will have a healthy and realistic view of your abilities and a situation. Because you respect yourself, others usually will too.

Tips for gifting to yourself self esteem!
You can help develop your self esteem, love and acceptance of yourself by focusing on the good things you do and all your great qualities. Here are a few suggestions that you can try to increase your self-esteem:

  • Choose your friends well. Choose to spend more time with people who help you feel good about yourself. Be in relationships that bring you up not drag you down.
  • Make a list of things you're good at. It can be anything from cooking, sports, drawing, writing, singing or telling a good joke. Now add a few things to your list that you would like to be good at. Now make a plan as to how you could work on developing skills you will need to be good at what’s on your list.
  • Give yourself a compliment a day. Find something you did during the day that was good. For example ‘I was a good listener today’ or ‘I was a good friend to Johnny today’ or ‘I made a good effort to complete my work today’
  • Keep a journal of good things said about you. Studies have shown that people with low self esteem tend to forget or filter out information that counters ingrained negative beliefs. Having a journal your write down praise given to you will enable you to remember and acknowledge your real value.
  • Express gratitude daily. Before you go to bed every night think of at least one thing in your day that you are grateful for. It could simply your toothbrush because it gives you clean teeth and fresh breath! Start with small things and build on it each day.
  • Accept your body. Remind yourself that there are some things that are uniquely yours – embrace them such as shoe size, skin color and height. Don’t compare yourself with others just learn from them. If you are wanting a healthier body learn skills to improve your health and take up a physical activity. Acknowledge your body’s strengths eg. I have strong legs, I can ride a bike really well.
  • Next negative thoughts and self critical remarks. Make a conscious effort to be aware of when a negative thought enters your mind. Stop it immediately and redirect yourself to healthier thoughts. Negative thoughts discourage and drag your self esteem down as does every time you make a self critical negative remark such as ‘I’m an idiot’ you are reinforcing negative patterns in your brain that do not serve you.

Have a Self Esteem Christmas!
Giving and Christmas always go hand in hand. So how about this Christmas you give self esteem as your gift this season! Here are a few suggestions:

- Send a self esteem Christmas card. Show your appreciation and thoughts by sending words of thanks, gratitude and acknowledgement of the person you are sending a Christmas card to in your greetings message. For example, thank friends for their friendship and smiling time spent together or if an employee, for their efforts and loyalty. The extra effort to acknowledge something personal and good about another goes a long way towards boosting anothers self esteem.

- Purchase self esteem presents. Think about your message and what kind of gift would go with it that would convey your words. Here are some examples - motivational books (to uplift and encourage) or a board games (great for sharing fun, smiles and memorable quality time together).

So now you know why you want to foster healthy self esteem in yourself and in your children and some tips to get you started. There is no better time to start than at Christmas, the time for giving and the time to give the life enhancing gift of self esteem!

Aspiring Santas head to school during the off-season

At seminar, Kriss Kringles learn tricks of their magical trade
12:00 AM CDT on Sunday, June 24, 2007
By MICHAEL E. YOUNG / The Dallas Morning News

In the bright heat of June with Christmas Eve a full six months away, Santa is already preparing for his big day.

MELANIE BURFORD/DMN
MELANIE BURFORD/DMN
'You must have something special as a Santa, something deep inside, a special love of children,' said Tim Connaghan, chancellor of the International University of Santa Claus.

Of course, it's a very big job.

At a small meeting room at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas, 16 Santas and a handful of Mrs. Clauses brushed up on their very special trade in what amounts to two days of graduate-level education for the North Pole crowd.

"Behind the Red Suit – the Business of Santa" covers everything from proper attitude – "Your job is creating happiness" – to tips and techniques for twirling a mustache and filling out a beard that could help those who are a bit thinner than the average Santa.

The living, breathing example of Santa-hood leading the seminar is Santa Tim – Tim Connaghan, chancellor of the International University of Santa Claus and president of the Amalgamated Order of Real Bearded Santas.

Santa Tim, resplendent in bright red pants, red shoes, red belt with an "S" belt buckle and red-and-white-striped shirt, takes this show on the road for much of the year, imparting the latest dos and don'ts in an ever-shifting Christmas landscape.

"The man in the suit, the hat, isn't just a rotund guy with a beard," he said. "You must have something special as a Santa, something deep inside, a special love of children.

"If you don't, they'll know."

Most of all, being Santa is a never-ending job.

Thinking of making a quick trip to the local builders' warehouse after cutting the lawn? Santa Tim advises his colleagues to clean up a little first, pull on a clean T-shirt, maybe a cap, because "any kids who see you will think, 'Is that Santa?' "

There's a whole bagful of responsibility to carry around. It isn't easy being Santa.

Consider the prickly issue of "Merry Christmas." For years, it was Santa's staple. But in an increasingly diverse society, mall operators worry that "Merry Christmas," with its Christian connotations, might offend.

"Here's my best advice," Santa Tim said. "If someone says 'Merry Christmas' to you, say it back to them. Otherwise, say 'Season's greetings' or 'Happy holidays.' "

And speaking of speaking, Santas need to watch their ho-ho-ho's.

A booming greeting as Santa strolls through the mall is one thing. But when a child approaches, lower the volume, he advised.

Santa faces challenges that other holiday figures – the Easter Bunny, for example – don't.

Santa, after all, knows everything, including the names of the children climbing onto his lap. So assistants must be trained to announce each child. That way, Santa can simply reply, "It's wonderful to see you again."

As for the don'ts, well, Santa Tim had quite a list.

Don't deny a child, a la Ralphie in A Christmas Story, who blurted out his desire for a Red Ryder BB gun only to hear, "You'll shoot your eye out, kid."

Never correct or reprimand a child, no matter how much a harried mom or dad might appreciate it.

Never flirt, never smoke, never drink.

And never, ever promise a gift, Santa Tim said, even if you see Mom nodding affirmatively from the corner of your eye.

"If they haven't bought it yet and the store sells out before they get it, guess who the bad guy is?"

Santas like Marshall Priest of Waskom, Texas, who works at a Bass Pro Shop in nearby Bossier City, La., hear incredible requests, like the one from a 3-year-old who wanted a shotgun.

But they also receive loads of love.

"Nothing makes you feel better than having one of these little ones throw their arms out and hug you," said Jerry Turner of Littleton, Colo.

Mostly, being Santa means bringing joy, and finding it.

Even a few unexpected delays couldn't dampen that.

When Santa Tim asked if the Santas wanted to stay until 6 p.m. Saturday to cover the course load, no one balked.

"We can stay until 9," said Gerald Roberts of Dallas. "This is great!

"I haven't had this much fun since last Christmas!"

International University of Santa

Santa is already preparing for Christmas

DALLAS, June 25 (UPI) -- It was Christmas during the weekend at the Hyatt Regency in Dallas, as mall Santas brushed up on their skills in two days of Santa classes.

Tim Connaghan, or "Santa Tim," leads the seminar, in which future mall Santas learn the dos and don'ts of the modern Santa, The Dallas Morning News reported.

"Behind the Red Suit -- the Business of Santa" offers tips for etiquette, like toning down a booming "ho ho ho" when small children are around. Also, Connaghan advises Santas never to correct, reprimand or deny a child.

The seminar also offers tips on how to get around modern obstacles like the "Merry Christmas" vs. "Seasons Greetings" controversy -- which has become a stickier issue as U.S. culture has become more ethnically diverse.

"Here's my best advice," Connaghan told the newspaper. "If someone says 'Merry Christmas' to you, say it back to them. Otherwise, say 'Season's greetings' or 'Happy holidays.'"

Sixteen Santas -- and even a few Mrs. Clauses -- attended Connaghan's seminar, which he calls the International University of Santa. By Copyright 2007 United Press International, Inc.

Bushes enjoy Ford's Theatre holiday gala

By ANN SANNER, Associated Press Writer

It might have been 80 degrees outside but it was snowing inside Ford's Theatre on Sunday, where President Bush attended a taping of an ABC holiday program.

Country singer Wynonna opened the show by performing "Winter Wonderland" on a stage decorated with white lights, Christmas trees and a sleigh. She asked Bush if he had done his Christmas shopping yet.

"Do you know what you're planning on getting your beautiful wife?" Wynonna asked. "Whatever she wants, right?" The president's response was inaudible.

The Ford's Theatre gala usually airs July Fourth, but ABC will televise this event in December in an effort to attract broader viewership.

Other performers included singers Yolanda Adams, Olivia Newton-John and Jon Secada, comedian Christopher Titus and "Dancing with the Stars" dancers Jonathan Roberts and Karina Smirnoff.

First lady Laura Bush was the gala's honorary chair.

Rep. John Lewis, a Georgia Democrat and civil rights veteran, and Civil War historian James McPherson were awarded Lincoln Medals. The award is given to those who exemplify President Lincoln's legacy and character through their work, accomplishments or personal attributes.

The annual benefit is held at the landmark theater where Lincoln was fatally shot in 1865.

"President Lincoln had a great appreciation for the performing arts," Bush said. "They offered relief amid the agonies of war, and he would likely be pleased that Ford's Theatre continues to bring together talented performers from across our country, including those with us tonight."
